Would you have liked to see a fashion show that opens up the runway to all women? Well, Masjid Al Islam and MSA-CT Council’s event was a sight to see. On Saturday, December 27, young Muslim girls and women from all over Connecticut, with a variety of ethnic backgrounds, displayed their trendy yet fully-covered and modest outfits all the way down the catwalk for an auditorium full of female audience members to see.

The Master of Ceremonies, Susan Antar, started off the evening by welcoming everyone and introducing Sister Matiniah Yahya, the organizer of the event and Masjid al Islam’s Sisterhood Chair. Sister Matiniah shared with us the beautiful purpose of the event, "…to work with other organizations to help increase self-esteem, awareness and respect for Islam while showing that there is halal (permissible) fun in Islam for the female population. Also, to encourage obedience to Allah by practicing modest dress. Finally, to show that we are part of a world community of those who believe and strive to obey Allah."

The elements of the fashion show were breath-taking. The Muslimah Scouts, which was the group of young girls ranging from five to thirteen choreographed by Sister Fay Latif and Sister Asia Williams, was the highlight of the evening with their adorable dresses and well-choreographed walk down the runway. The Fashionistas, which ranged from high school students to working professionals, delivered an elegant walk to the Dawud Wharnsby’s "Veil" nasheed (Islamic song) choreographed by Rubbab Chaudhry, the current President of MSA-CT Council.

There was also a sections of the fashion show that styled the Mom and Tots, the Elders called Passing the Baton.and also had a selection of Wedding Dresses that were worn by the owners on their special day in the the past.

It was a pleasant evening filled with not only a fashion show, but with spoken word by Najla Muhammad and
Umm Juwayriyah, inspirational video clips, new Muslims were recognized and given words of encouragement to be strong and patient as they learn their new religion, personal statements, prizes, and raffles.

There was also a meaningful talk by Sister Matiniah on the economic situation and how it is affecting our community. A program, that Masjid Al Islam has already begun to implement is known as the Economic Survival Initiative. Monthly 90-minute informational presentations are being organized to provide more comprehensive advice, assistance and support to low and moderate income individuals in areas such as food, furniture, money and loans. Food and clothing are given away free after some Jumuahs at Masjid Al Islam . The Economic Survival Initiativehas gotten off on a good start. The need for such information and services is really needed during these difficult times.

Last but not least, food! A delicious pasta dinner was served after the event. Special thanks to the chefs of Masjid Al Islam’s brotherhood.

Farah Khalid, a muslimah from High School, shared, "The Muslim Fashion Show for female Muslims was an outstanding experience. It showed that covering yourself up is not a bad thing and you can be beautiful while practicing your religion.

It also showed me that there is such a wide variety of Muslims from all over the world. It shows that Muslims from around the world come together and will stand strong and will not put up with discrimination because of the way they dress. We as Muslim women are proud of our religion and will not give our religion up for anything. We will shine even if we are covered.

It was amazing and I would like to thank Masjid Al Islam and MSA-CT Council for putting this wonderful program together. It has affected me tremendously as a young Muslim."

It was an enlightening experience for all Muslim and non-muslim women who attended. The diversity was a key take-away from the event. Sister Fay Latif shared,

"I thought it turned out to be a wonderful event. There were a lot of non-Muslims in the audience who got a chance to see Muslims enjoying themselves. They got the chance to see Muslims dressed modestly and still look beautiful and elegant...I think that overall everyone, even the non-Muslims enjoyed the fashion show and got a much better understanding of us."

Masjid Al Islam and MSA-CT Council hopes to continue this as an annual event since it projected their goals of community involvement and diversity awareness perfectly. They hope that next year, even more women will attend and be able to appreciate how much their religion has elevated and beautified them through modesty.
